Polar research vessel

Designed by Rolls-Royce Marine and constructed by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, RV Kronprins Haakon is an icebreaker and research vessel owned and operated by the Norwegian Polar Institute. The ship, which was completed in 2018, is equipped with a hangar for two helicopters and is equipped to carry out oceanography, marine biology and geology.

Kronprins Haakon is powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system consisting of four medium-speed diesel engines that produce power for azimuth and bow thrusters. For this application Walton Engineering supplied 150mm and 250mm bore stainless steel pneumatically operated valves complete with 4-20mA electro-pneumatic positioners. All equipment had to be suitable for the extreme cold temperatures encountered in polar regions.
