A new class of PPA multipurpose offshore ships is currently under construction by Fincantieri for the Italian Navy. Seven vessels have been ordered with three more on option.  The first of class Paolo Thaon di Revel was commissioned on 18 March 2022 with completion of the remaining vessels scheduled through the 2020s.

The class has been designed with a high level of modularity and automation, and each vessel is being produced in one of three configurations: full, light+ and light. These versions incorporate different capabilities ranging from patrol and sea rescue to civil protection operations and, in the full version, combat capability.
